Christians are the world’s most widely persecuted faith group according to research by the Pew Research Centre. This talk by John Pontifex will assess the scale of Christian persecution today and consider whether in parts of the Middle East Church communities have suffered genocide. He will show how project support, prayer, constitutional and legal overhaul, awareness-raising and government action are some of the levers of change that are needed to safeguard a community, which is now threatened with extinction in its Biblical heartland. This is a task that by necessity involves all of us, not only fellow Christians, but all those who care about communities denied a voice.
John Pontifex works for Aid to the Church in Need, which supports persecuted and other suffering Christians around the world. Over 18 years as Head of Press & Information for ACN, he has travelled to some of the most dangerous countries for Christians including Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Eritrea, India, China and Sudan. He provided research for last year’s Bishop of Truro’s Independent Review for the UK Foreign Secretary of FCO Support for Persecuted Christians.
